Travel Tips from Jean...

From the 2010 MN PKU Foundation Calendar - tips for a cruise or a destination vacation.

  • Confer ahead of time regarding the availability of special diet accomodations.
  • Carry a letter from clinic explaining diet, formula, and special foods.
  • Low protein pasta travels well!  It can be mixed with sauteed veggies, or try soup mixes from PKU Perspectives.
  • Cruise lines have abundant food choices.  The chefs on board can be very creative!  Be sure to monitor your portion sizes.
  • Buffets are a great way to make the PKU diet stand out less.
  • For convenience and easy packing, try some of the single serving formulas or formula bars.
  • Snacks for traveling

    • Fruit roll-ups, fruit snacks, gushers
    • Apples, apple chips, dried apple rings (sliced apples often avail in produce)
    • Hard candy, tootsie rolls, lollipops, smarties, skittles, starburst
    • Sundried fruit, raisins, Craisins, apricots
    • Applesauce snack packs, applesauce crushers (Trader Joe's or Peter Rabbit Organics)
    • Gorp
    • Lo pro crackers/cookies/ pretzels
    • Sliced and prepared fruits and vegetables, cherry tomatoes
    • dry cereal (serving size boxes)
    • Wise Onion rings, TGI Fridays Tater Skins
    • Hunt's Lemon Pudding, Hunts or Kraft Gel Packs, Trader Joe's gel packs
    • Juice boxes/bags
    • Cup-a-soup (check phe in Low Protein food list)
    • Rice cakes, tapioca cakes
    • Olives and pickles

    Handy Equipment for Travel

    • Hot pot/hot plate
    • Cooler with electric power pack (plugs into outlet or car power)
    • Calculator
    • Assorted sizes of zipper bags or disposible containers

    • Premeasure formula for day/serving into zipper bags
    • Premeasure low protein food into single servings, lable container with phe amount.
